## About the Italian Consulate in San Francisco

_Italy's consular office for Northern California and seven Pacific Northwest/Mountain West states — with the largest geographic jurisdiction of any U.S. Italian consulate and unique "Certificazioni di Traduzione" terminology._

The **Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco** — _Consolato Generale d'Italia a San Francisco_ — is one of [nine career Italian consulates in the United States](/us/en/italian-consulate/).[\[1\]](#ref-1) It provides consular services to Italian citizens and residents of **Northern California, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington** — the largest geographic jurisdiction of any Italian consulate in the U.S., spanning from the Pacific Northwest to the mid-Pacific and Mountain West.[\[2\]](#ref-2)

California is split between two Italian consulates: San Francisco covers **Northern California** — all counties except Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura, which are served by the [Consulate General in Los Angeles](/us/en/italian-consulate/los-angeles/). This county-level split is unique among U.S. Italian consulates, where most jurisdictions follow state lines.[\[2\]](#ref-2) San Francisco's jurisdiction also extends to U.S. Pacific territories: American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Johnston, Wake, and Midway atolls.

The Consul General, **Massimo Carnelos**, assumed his post in San Francisco on 18 August 2025.[\[3\]](#ref-3) The consulate is located in a standalone building at **2590 Webster Street** in the Pacific Heights neighborhood.[\[4\]](#ref-4)

San Francisco uses the unique term **"Certificazioni di Traduzione"** for its translation certification service — a name found at no other U.S. Italian consulate (all others use variants of "traduzione e legalizzazione").[\[5\]](#ref-5) Despite the formal-sounding name, the requirements are not more restrictive: **anyone can translate** — no formal credentials are required. The consulate certifies the conformity of the translation, not the translator's qualifications. Notably, **translation certification is FREE for citizenship (jure sanguinis) applicants filing through San Francisco** — the only U.S. consulate offering this benefit.[\[5\]](#ref-5)

Consulate vs. Embassy

The **consulate** handles citizens' services for Northern California, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. The Italian **Embassy** in Washington, D.C. handles diplomatic relations with the U.S. federal government and consular services for DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

After-hours emergency

Outside business hours, Italian citizens facing a consular emergency can call **+1 (415) 999-0094** or email **sanfrancisco.assistenza@esteri.it**. After 10:00 PM, call MAECI Rome at **+39 06 36912666**. This number is reserved for **proven emergencies only**.[\[6\]](#ref-6)

## Consular jurisdiction: Northern California + 7 states & Pacific territories

_The San Francisco consulate serves Northern California (partial — excludes southern counties under LA), plus the entire states of Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, and U.S. Pacific territories._

The Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco has the **largest geographic jurisdiction** among all nine U.S. Italian consulates. It serves **Northern California** (all counties not assigned to Los Angeles), plus the **entire territory** of Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. It also covers American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Johnston, Wake, and Midway atolls.[\[2\]](#ref-2)

Southern California residents

If you live in Southern California (Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, or Ventura county), your consulate is the [Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles](/us/en/italian-consulate/los-angeles/). Prenot@mi enforces jurisdiction by address — booking an appointment at the wrong consulate will cause the appointment to be rejected.

## Consular services

### Vital records (Stato Civile)

`[statocivile.sanfrancisco@esteri.it](mailto:statocivile.sanfrancisco@esteri.it)` · `+1 (415) 292-9215` · [Official page ↗](https://conssanfrancisco.esteri.it/en/servizi-consolari-e-visti/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano/stato-civile/)

Transcription of U.S. vital records (births) into Italian municipal registries. Processing time is **30 days** from receipt — the consulate transmits the act to the Italian municipality for transcription. Transcription itself is **free of charge**; only apostille and translation carry costs.[\[7\]](#ref-7) San Francisco uses the unique term **"Certificazioni di Traduzione"** for its translation certification service — but this does **not** mean you need a certified translator. Anyone can translate; the consulate certifies the conformity of the translation, not the translator's credentials.[\[5\]](#ref-5) U.S. vital records must be translated into Italian before submission — [Partenza](/us/en/) provides professional translations of U.S. birth, marriage, and death certificates formatted for consular transcription.

### Citizenship (Cittadinanza)

`[cittadinanza.sanfrancisco@esteri.it](mailto:cittadinanza.sanfrancisco@esteri.it)` · [Official page ↗](https://conssanfrancisco.esteri.it/en/servizi-consolari-e-visti/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano/cittadinanza/)

Italian citizenship applications by descent (jure sanguinis), by marriage, and by residence; citizenship declarations (Art. 4A); citizenship certificates (Art. 4B). The statutory processing time is **730 days** (approximately 2 years) from receipt of a complete file. Jure sanguinis appointments typically have the longest backlogs (3+ years at San Francisco). **Law 74/2025 (effective 24 May 2025)** introduced new limits to generational transmission: persons born abroad with another citizenship no longer automatically inherit Italian citizenship unless a parent or grandparent was exclusively Italian at death, or a parent resided in Italy for at least 2 consecutive years post-naturalization.[\[8\]](#ref-8)[\[9\]](#ref-9) **Translation certification is FREE for citizenship applicants filing through San Francisco**.[\[5\]](#ref-5) Every U.S. vital record submitted with a jure sanguinis application requires certified Italian translation — see [Partenza](/us/en/) for vital records translation formatted for consular submission.

### Notarial & translation certification (Notarile)

`[notarile.sanfrancisco@esteri.it](mailto:notarile.sanfrancisco@esteri.it)` · `+1 (415) 292-9215` · [Official page ↗](https://conssanfrancisco.esteri.it/en/servizi-consolari-e-visti/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano/traduzione-e-legalizzazione-dei-documenti/)

Translation certification ("Certificazioni di Traduzione"), public acts, wills, private deed authentication, powers of attorney, legalizations, and succession-related formalities. **Translation certification is processed by mail only** — no walk-ins or email submissions.[\[10\]](#ref-10) Submit: original document, complete translation (every word), money order or cashier's check payable to "Consolato Generale d'Italia – San Francisco," and a prepaid USPS Priority return envelope. Processing time: **1–2 weeks**. Translations must be printed **single-sided in portrait format** using correct Italian with appropriate legal terminology.[\[5\]](#ref-5) **Available only to Italian citizens living abroad.** Appointment required for in-person notarial services (Mon–Fri 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM).[\[10\]](#ref-10)

### Passports, CIE & ETD (Passaporti)

`[passaporti.sanfrancisco@esteri.it](mailto:passaporti.sanfrancisco@esteri.it)` · [Official page ↗](https://conssanfrancisco.esteri.it/en/servizi-consolari-e-visti/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano/passaporti/)

Italian passport issuance and renewal for adults and minors under 18, Electronic ID cards (CIE), and emergency travel documents (ETD). Passports are **valid 10 years**; processing time is **15 days** from receipt (extendable by 15 days if further verification is needed). Book via Prenot@mi **no earlier than 6 months** before expiration.[\[11\]](#ref-11) San Francisco is the **only consulate authorized to issue ETDs** (emergency travel documents) for its entire jurisdiction — covering Northern California, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

### AIRE registry (Anagrafe)

`[anagrafe.sanfrancisco@esteri.it](mailto:anagrafe.sanfrancisco@esteri.it)` · [Official page ↗](https://conssanfrancisco.esteri.it/en/servizi-consolari-e-visti/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano/anagrafe-degli-italiani-residenti-allestero-aire/)

Registration of Italian citizens residing abroad in the AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all'Estero) database. **Mandatory within 90 days** of moving abroad for stays over 12 months. The consulate transmits the registration to the Italian municipality within **180 days** of receipt. Since 1 Jan 2024, non-registration carries fines of **€200–€1,000 per year** (up to 5 years).[\[12\]](#ref-12)

### Visas (Visti)

`[visti.sanfrancisco@esteri.it](mailto:visti.sanfrancisco@esteri.it)` · [Official page ↗](https://conssanfrancisco.esteri.it/en/servizi-consolari-e-visti/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero/visti/)

Visa applications for non-Italian citizens travelling or relocating to Italy: Schengen short-stay visas (processing **15 days**, extendable to 45), national type-D long-stay visas (**90 days**, 120 for self-employment, 30 for family reunification), and student visas. **U.S. citizens do NOT need a visa** for stays up to 90 days. Type D applicants are **fingerprinted on-site** (mandatory since 11 Jan 2025).[\[13\]](#ref-13) Payment: money order or cashier's check payable to "Consolato Generale d'Italia – San Francisco" — no cash, no cards.

## Frequently asked questions

Which areas does the San Francisco consulate serve?

Northern California (all counties except those assigned to Los Angeles), plus the entire states of Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. San Francisco also covers U.S. Pacific territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Johnston/Wake/Midway atolls). Southern California is served by the Los Angeles consulate.

How do I book an appointment?

All appointments are booked online via [prenotami.esteri.it](https://prenotami.esteri.it).[\[14\]](#ref-14) Create a free account, select "San Francisco," choose your service type, and book the first available slot.

How long are appointment wait times?

Wait times vary by service type and season. **Passport renewals and AIRE registrations** typically have shorter waits (weeks to a few months). **Citizenship (jure sanguinis)** appointments can carry multi-year backlogs — Check live availability on Prenot@mi for your specific service.[\[14\]](#ref-14)

Do I need to confirm my Prenot@mi appointment?

Yes. You must confirm your appointment on the Prenot@mi portal **between 10 and 3 days before the scheduled date**. Without confirmation, the system automatically cancels the reservation. Log into Prenot@mi, select _I miei appuntamenti_, click the appointment, and check the confirmation box.

Can I use a third-party service to book an appointment faster?

No. **Do not use paid booking agents or third-party services.** Reservations made by third parties are refused without notice, and fraudulent slot captures risk Prenot@mi access being blocked.[\[15\]](#ref-15) Book directly at [prenotami.esteri.it](https://prenotami.esteri.it).

What does "Certificazioni di Traduzione" mean? Do I need a certified translator?

No. Despite the formal-sounding name (unique to San Francisco among U.S. Italian consulates), **anyone can translate** — no formal credentials are required. The consulate certifies the conformity of the translation, not the translator's qualifications. Translations must be complete (every word translated), printed single-sided in portrait format, and written in correct Italian with appropriate legal terminology.[\[5\]](#ref-5) [Partenza](/us/en/) provides [professional English-to-Italian translation](/us/en/about/) formatted for consular submission.

Is translation certification free at the San Francisco consulate?

Yes — **for citizenship (jure sanguinis) applicants filing through San Francisco**. This is unique among all U.S. Italian consulates. For other purposes, the standard administrative fee applies (Art. 72A: $15.30/page EN→IT).[\[5\]](#ref-5)[\[16\]](#ref-16)

How long does the citizenship application take to process?

The statutory processing time is **730 days** (approximately 2 years) from receipt of a complete file. Complex cases may take longer. The consular network has until **31 December 2028** to receive jure sanguinis intent declarations.[\[9\]](#ref-9)

How did Law 74/2025 change Italian citizenship by descent?

**Legge n. 74 of 23 May 2025** modified Italy's 1992 citizenship law.[\[8\]](#ref-8) Persons born abroad with another citizenship no longer automatically inherit Italian citizenship. Jure sanguinis is now recognized only if: (1) a parent or grandparent possessed exclusively Italian citizenship at death, OR (2) a parent resided in Italy for at least 2 consecutive years after acquiring Italian citizenship.[\[9\]](#ref-9) Applications confirmed before 27 March 2025 are grandfathered.

What forms of payment are accepted?

Money order or cashier's check payable to **"Consolato Generale d'Italia – San Francisco."** Separate money orders required for each applicant. **No cash, no debit cards, no credit cards, no personal checks.**[\[17\]](#ref-17)

Do I need to register with AIRE?

If you are an Italian citizen living in Northern California, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, or Washington and expect to stay **more than 12 months**, yes — AIRE registration is mandatory within **90 days** of moving abroad. Since 1 Jan 2024, non-registration carries fines of €200–€1,000 per year.[\[12\]](#ref-12)

Do U.S. citizens need a visa to travel to Italy?

No. U.S. citizens do not need a visa for stays up to **90 days**. For longer stays, a National Visa (Type D) is required.[\[18\]](#ref-18)

Who is the current Consul General?

Massimo Carnelos, who assumed his post in San Francisco on 18 August 2025.[\[3\]](#ref-3)
